Sunday conversation: What are you looking forward to at the Confluence?
February 26, 2012
We may have asked this question early on, but with the Ashtanga Yoga Confluence now just a few days away — and the Confluence’s sending out an update and a list of assistant teachers earlier this month — it feels like a good time to ask it again:
What are you most looking forward to?
It might be the simple chance to practice with one, or all, of the teachers. Perhaps it is one of the sessions. (Surely not the backbending one?) Maybe it is the chance to be around 350 Ashtangis.
Or maybe it is something else?

I’m looking forward for a chance to be a student. I do look forward to the back bending workshop with Richard! “Why fearing?!”
I’m excited to be in the Pranayama workshop with Tim, too.
I’m curious about what the group vibe will be like amongst 350 Ashtanga folks all hoping for the attention of the teachers (while trying not to seem like they are, perhaps). Will folks be mellow, gregarious, supportive and kind – or competitive, cliquey and selfish? Probably a bit of both, hopefully more of the former. (I’ve read some disturbing blog posts from folks currently in Mysore about “jealousy” and “humiliation” and competition for attention and new postures.)
Speaking of Mysore, aside from the annual migration there, is this the first time this many Ashtanga folks have gotten together in one place? Just curious.*
What will arise for folks? Will we be conscious enough to not get to attached to personally desired outcomes, and just enjoy the shared experience?
(*I was at the first Ashtanga Mela at Kripalu years back, with David S., David W. and Danny Paradise. Maybe half as many people as the Confluence.)
Hi Michelle.
Both of those workshops will be great.
I think there was a pretty large group during Guruji’s 2001 tours… but 350 at one time for a few days like this, I don’t think so — not in the West. Maybe there’s something I don’t know from Europe or Australia.
With these teachers, I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to let whatever arises arise.
See you in a few days.
