Tim Miller reflects on September 11, 2001

This week’s Tuesdays with Timji reflects, appropriately, on 9/11. In his post, Tim gives a personal account of the events during and immediately following the attacks.

I had been planning a trip to New York City on Thursday September 13th to see Guruji. Now New York was in flames and the whole country had been plunged into chaos. My wife, Carol, was eight months pregnant at the time, and, under the circumstances, we decided it was best for me not to go. Guruji kept teaching in New York of course.

Tim’s account reflects thoughtfully on the meaning and politics, the repercussions and costs of the subsequent events. Check it out here.

One note: We hate to correct the guru, but in his entry, Tim says that someone reminded him recently that the Mandala Mantra was added as a closing prayer after 9/11. This was a student at the most recent teacher training. We checked on this with Eddie Stern, who was with Guruji at the time, and who says Guruji taught it to him some time in the late 1990s–prior to 9/11–as a closing prayer. It does make sense, though, that Tim had not heard it before then, since he hadn’t seen Guruji in those earlier years, and his plans to practice with him and visit were so tragically cut short.
