Breath and bandhas

This being an Ashtanga blog, we’ve written fairly often about the bandhas.

This morning, Bobbie and I have been talking about the bandhas — plus picking up, transitions, and moving with the breath.

Always a challenge.

Here’s a video featuring Leslie Kaminoff, talking about the bandhas and breath, and showing a way to discover them:

Perhaps we’ll give that a try before practice this morning. And by “we” I really mean: Me.

  1. Thanks for posting this. I recorded this in Vancouver in 2012 while teaching there at YYoga. It was a rather off-the-cuff series of videos, and they volunteered one of their lovely staff members as my demo model.

It’s always interesting working with someone for the first time – especially on camera – and I don’t think she’d done much breath/bandha work before, so this clip is really about getting her to feel something about the connection between spinal movement and breath mechanics.

    1. It was the informality that really drew me to it. And I did the technique — if that’s the right word — before practice. Not sure I got as hollowed out as she did, but it helped put a position in the mind for where the bandhas are — a subtle body map of sorts.
