After very little — even no — news about the health of BKS Iyengar since word came he’d been admitted to a hospital in Pune, on Sunday news came that the 96-year-old had been put on kidney dialysis.
The Times of India had the news:
“Nephrologists from the Mumbai-based Jaslok Hospital examined him on Sunday and advised him to undergo dialysis as his kidneys are not functioning adequately. Hence, we put him on dialysis on Sunday. His heart is also not functioning well and is pumping less blood than what is required,” said a doctor treating him.
Two days ago, Iyengar’s kidneys had responded to treatment and there had been some improvement in his health condition. But since Saturday, his urine output dropped and hasn’t picked up again, the doctor said.
Doctors are still saying they hope he recovers. Iyengar is conscious and eating.
It seems we are not hearing too much as Iyengar’s family is trying to keep things as private as possible; one report I saw mentioned that the family is not releasing the name of the hospital where he is in order to avoid crowds gathering there.
There also was this update from the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States:
Dear Friends in Iyengar Yoga,
You may have seen the news stories that Guruji has been admitted to the hospital.
We have been told that Guruji is recovering, and we will let you know when we receive further news.
The family has requested privacy at this point.
Guruji and his family are in all of our thoughts and prayers.
Janet Lilly, IYNAUS President
I think that probably came before the news of his being put on dialysis.
