Encinitas yoga trial inches on; opponents charge students ‘forced’ to participate

At some point soon, we should be reaching yet another “are we done yet, nope” moment in the years-long battle about the Encinitas school district running a yoga program. On Friday, the lawyers for the opponents sent out news that the Appellate briefing was complete, meaning a three-judge panel now has all the info it … Continue reading Encinitas yoga trial inches on; opponents charge students ‘forced’ to participate

Encinitas yoga trial: It’s a conspiracy to trick students!

I was going to hold off on any more coverage of the Encinitas yoga trial — try to wait and see what Wednesday holds — but then I checked out other coverage of Tuesday’s expert testimony by religious studies professor Candy Brown. And, man, I don’t want to dis the U-T San Diego, but it … Continue reading Encinitas yoga trial: It’s a conspiracy to trick students!

‘The most advanced group of students I’ve ever had gathered together at one time’

That’s Tim Miller, describing the group of Ashtanga practitioners who are in Encinitas for the Third Series training. More from his blog, which went up a little bit ago. (And then, yes, on to surf. Practice, as it was, is done.) All of it is here: It’s quite a dedicated group of practitioners—highly motivated and … Continue reading ‘The most advanced group of students I’ve ever had gathered together at one time’

Breaking news: Yoga can continue in Encinitas schools

It’s over. For now. California’s 4th District Court of Appeal on Friday upheld the trial court’s ruling that rejected the anti-yoga lawsuit by parents who wanted to keep Encinitas schools from teaching yoga. Encinitas yoga trial: ‘Tired rhetoric’ vs. ‘precedent-setting litigation’

I suppose you could call this a tale of two courtrooms. On Wednesday, the two sides in the ongoing legal case surrounding yoga’s being taught in Encinitas public schools — by the Ashtanga-related Sonima Foundation — were back in court. Their takes on the preceding differ, as you might suspect. Up first, the supporters of … Continue reading Encinitas yoga trial: ‘Tired rhetoric’ vs. ‘precedent-setting litigation’

Supporters of yoga in Encinitas schools ‘surgically dismantle’ anti-yoga side

I missed this a bit, but last month, the supporters of the Encinitas yoga program uploaded their brief in the ongoing lawsuit. “Our arguments surgically dismantle plaintiffs’ theories and we look forward to having our victory affirmed,” they say. (The post is signed by the supporters’ pro bono lawyer, Dave Peck.) Link to the brief … Continue reading Supporters of yoga in Encinitas schools ‘surgically dismantle’ anti-yoga side

Lest you think that lawsuit against the Sonima Foundation-funded yoga program in Encinitas schools just disappeared with the first ruling in favor of yoga, think again. As promised, the opponents last fall filed an appeal. And now the supporters have got some additional legal firepower as they work on their response, which is due in mid-August. … Continue reading Yes, there’s still a lawsuit about yoga in Encinitas schools

Encinitas parents told to protect their kids from yoga, and other news from this week

Turns out, this was a good week for yoga in the news. And that, of course, means news of both the good and bad variety. I’ll start with the one most relevant to Ashtanga.
